Circuit question - please help?

The resistors are in series, therefore the current through each resistor is the same and the voltage is different. In a parallel ckt the voltages across each resistor is the same and the current is different. Bottom line, in a series circuit, the current is defined by the sum of the resistors. Your mistake is thinking the voltage across R1 is 30 volts. Think about a voltage divider.
