What do batteries contain?

So like, i was tryin to crack open this battery, cause i was bored, and my mom was like, o my gosh, what are you doing? i was like, whoah!! so then, i was wondering what the heck could be in batteries that causes my mom to think its some kind of wretched, horrible, thing? YAAA, so, just wonderin!!
